Description: The County Route 48 Bridge over the Saranac River is the only major crossing of the Saranac River between Saranac Lake and Clayburg. With an off-site detour length of 28 miles, getting the bridge back open to traffic as quickly as possible was the primary objective of this project. The site encompassed numerous design challenges including bedrock elevations varying from 10 to 25 feet below the roadway surface, bedrock outcrops on both approaches which limited alignment alternatives, high voltage transmission lines located parallel to the bridge and a power generating dam located just downstream. NYSDOT, Franklin County and Barton & Loguidice worked together closely to develop a replacement alternative that not only replaced a deficient bridge, but also minimized the impacts to the adjacent communities. A replacement alternative utilizing precast concrete components and drilled micropiles allowed the bridge to be completely replaced while closing the bridge to traffic for 19 days.
