Russell Residents Raise Concerns Over Plans For New Bridge

The bridge that takes County Route 24 over the Grass River is one of 35 structurally deficient bridges in St. Lawrence County, and earlier this year the county announced plans to replace it. But many residents are not happy with the proposed plan, which includes a five-foot shoulder but no raised sidewalk to protect pedestrian traffic. In February, county officials announced that they had received a $3.1 million grant from the state to replace the bridge, which was originally built in 1929. In October, the New York State Department of Transportation put a 10-ton weight limit on the bridge, causing a number of school buses to be re-routed. Read More >>

Onondaga County Now Included In New York's Free Roadside Service

New York state's free roadside service is expanding to Onondaga County, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday. The Highway Emergency Local Patrol (HELP) service travels highways during the morning and afternoon rush hours to provide traffic control at incidents and make minor repairs that get disabled motorists back on the road to improve highway safety and reduce congestion. The service in Onondaga County began on Dec. 1. Read More >>

Improvements Coming to Route 13

Last Monday morning, the Tompkins County Legislature’s Transportation Committee met to propose a study group on Route 13 to begin working on a proposal that could potentially, lead to improvements on the often congested, slow-moving thoroughfare. The brainstorming session – the committee’s first on the issue – stems from the denial of an appeal for a study by the New York State Department of Transportation which, while interested in the matter, lacked the necessary funds to conduct such a study. Read More >>

State to Spend 6M on Canal Bridges in Wayne County

Wayne County Highway Superintendent Kevin Rooney said he was pleased with the news as well. “We are excited that the New York State DOT will be making the investments in four bridges that carry Wayne County roadways over the Erie Canal,” he said. “These improvements will help to ensure that travel throughout the county continues without delay.” Read More >>

Red Bridge is Red Again

"In 1961 the town bulldozer went into the creek under the 'Red Bridge' just north of my house to dig out the channel, shoving sand and gravel to either side," Parish wrote.  "Then the County, which I am told takes care of all bridges more than 25 feet long, hired some company to repair the bridge.  We were entertained by the noise of the jackhammers tearing out the concrete floor, then they put in new iron rods and concrete.  The bridge was closed to traffic seven weeks, the ironwork was painted green and yellow.  The bridge was put in in 1923 by Collins (name and date were on the southern abutment) after the former bridge was washed away in the flood of August 1922." Purcell noted that County Highway Manager Jeff Smith and his foreman wanted to be there for the ribbon cutting, but had conflicts in their schedules. Read More >>

US Infrastructure and Water Not Broken

While much of the nation's transportation and water infrastructure is adequately maintained, a 2.5 percent to 3 percent annual spending increase above the total of more than $235 billion now spent annually by local, state, and federal agencies on transportation and water infrastructure largely would eliminate existing maintenance backlogs by 2030, according to researchers. Read More >>

2018 ARTBA Transportation Construction Forecast: Modest

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has released its economic forecast for 2018, and it anticipates the U.S. transportation infrastructure market to rebound slightly next year, following a 2.8 percent drop in 2017. The 2017 market drop was largely driven by the overall national decline in state and local highway and bridge spending, which is expected to be down 6.4 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively. The 2017 market performance is expected to come in at $247.1 billion. ARTBA Chief Economist Dr. Alison Premo Black shared the findings in her multimodal forecast during a webinar for analysts, investors, transportation construction market executives, and public officials. Read More >>
