It's Report Card Time For Erie County Bridges

Across Erie County every day, drivers pass over bridges and culverts, usually carrying some waterway under a county road. It is time for report cards on the culverts and small bridges. Every four years, the county hires a consultant to investigate the spans. The Erie County Legislature recently approved an upper limit of $390,000 to hire the experts.This is just the county's bridges, not those of the federal government, New York State, cities, towns and villages. Public Works Funding Falls as Infrastructure Deteriorates

WASHINGTON — It’s basically the opposite of a major government infrastructure program.Government spending on transportation and other public works is in decline as federal funding stagnates and state and local governments tighten their belts. Such spending equaled 1.4 percent of the nation’s economic output in the second quarter of 2017, the lowest level on record, according to Census Bureau data. In West Virginia, where President Trump on Thursday touted a vague $1 trillion infrastructure plan, public works spending has fallen for five straight years. Read More >>

County Commissioners Face Brief Agenda

A brief agenda greeted the trio of Rush County Commissioners Paul Wilkinson, Mark Bacon and Bruce Levi, Monday. County surveyor Marvin Rees requested the county enter into a lease agreement to provide his office with a new printer. According to Rees, the color printer is an important tool utilized by his office and is in need of being replaced. He continued by saying there is funding for the request currently in his office’s budget. Following a brief discussion, the county leaders approved the measure.In an unrelated matter, Ride Rush Director Wanda Henderson requested the county leaders’ signature on a quarterly activity report for the county’s public transportation system which the state requires. Following approval, Henderson then asked that the county leaders consider drafting an ordinance stipulating that Ride Rush is the county’s form of public transportation. According to Henderson, Ride Rush is having difficulty securing municipal license plates for the fleet of vehicles. Read More >>

Bridges Focus For County 

HOT SPRINGS – Fall River County Commissioners focused on bridges and related issues for a good part of their Tuesday, Aug. 1, meeting. South Dakota Department of Transportation Engineering Supervisor Doug Kinniburgh was on hand to update the commissioners on the state’s angle on several local bridges. He was joined by County Highway Superintendent Randy Seiler, and Brosz Engineering’s Ross Eberle to answer bridge-related questions. Read More >>

Mexico Unclogs Morelos Highway Flood Sewer
Mexico's transport and communications ministry SCT said it unclogged the sewer pipeline that was reportedly causing floods in the area where a sinkhole formed last month on the Paso Exprés highway, located in Morelos state capital Cuernavaca. The highway opened in April at a cost of 2.5bn pesos (US$140mn) following a four-month construction delay and a significant cost overrun. Read More >>

William Geary Jr. Appointed Erie County DPW Commissioner 

William Geary Jr. was appointed commissioner of the Erie County Department of Public Works effective July 25, 2017. Geary previously served as deputy commissioner of the department in the highways division. Prior to that, Geary he worked as a senior highway maintenance engineer of the department. Before starting employment with Erie County, he held numerous roles in the Town of West Seneca Highway and Engineering departments. Geary has served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve since 1991 and was named “Reservist of the Year” in 2004. During his military career he has been awarded 20 medals from the Air Force. His military service includes two one-year tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
