St. Lawrence County Postpones Highway Projects Fearing Possible State Funding Cuts

Several highway projects have been postponed as St. Lawrence County prepares for what will likely be a 20 percent cut in state funding in the wake of budget shortfalls brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the postponements are four miles worth of paving projects including County Road 10 in Rossie, County Road 54 in Lawrence and County Road 20 in Hermon. Don J. Chambers, St. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent said the county also plans to postpone a structural project to extend the shoulders on County Road 51 in Lawrence. Read More >>

Signify Connects New York Outdoor Lighting

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is working with Signify on a street-light retrofit project first launched back in 2018. There have already been 50,000 LED street lights installed. And now the NYPA is offering municipalities in the state financing options and also logistical and technical help for communities that want to add connectivity. Read More >>

US Construction Adds 158,000 Jobs As Infrastructure Declines

The associations’s Chief Economist, Ken Simonson, said: “The gain in construction employment in June was concentrated in homebuilding, with scattered increases in nonresidential building, while heavy and civil engineering construction employment—the category that includes many highway and other infrastructure workers—shrank by nearly 10,000 jobs.” Read More >>

Congress Takes Steps Towards New Highway Bill

House Democrats rolled out a $500 billiondraft transportation infrastructure bill on June 3 that includes significant investments in the country’s aging roads and bridges, along with a call to strengthen rear underride guard standards. Read More >>


Summer Conference Update
 

Dear NYSCHSA Member,

I sincerely regret to inform you that the NYSCHSA Executive Committee has made the very hard decision to cancel the 2020 Professional Development Summer Conference in Lake Placid. We were all looking forward to seeing you this August for another summer program filled with information sharing, exciting CEC sessions and outstanding face-to-face networking. With summer programs already planned for 2021 (Rochester Hyatt) and 2022 (Thousand Islands Harbor Hotel), we plan to visit Lake Placid again in 2023.

I want to thank everyone who has provided the Association with feedback regarding the summer conference plans. I look forward to seeing everyone when it is safe to do so.
