Cayuga County Appoints Temporary Highway Superintendent

The newly independent Cayuga County Highway Department was assigned temporary leadership during an emergency Legislature meeting. Building and Grounds Superintendent Gary Duckett will act as temporary head of the department, which was housed under the Public Works Department until the Legislature dissolved it as a single administrative entity in May. His appointment Thursday evening followed a private executive session among the legislators lasting more than two hours, which Legislature Chair Aileen McNabb-Coleman said they used in part to discuss Duckett's temporary assignment. Read More >>

Assembly Minority Urges Governor to Allow Local Road, Bridge & Highway Projects Operating

The Assembly Minority Conference has taken a strong stand urging Gov. Cuomo to allow repair and construction activities on local roads and bridges to resume. “Getting local crews up and running would address mounting infrastructure issues, help stimulate economies across the state and get thousands of men and women back to work,” the minority conference wrote. Read More >>

Coronavirus Putting A Big Dent in Cattaraugus County's Finances

The coronavirus pandemic has put a big dent in Cattaraugus County’s revenue. With New York state looking at a $13 billion budget shortfall — due largely to COVID-19 — local governments have been warned of impending cuts in state aid. The question is, how much? Early in the pandemic, Cattaraugus County Administrator Jack Searles directed department heads to prepare plans for state aid cuts between 20% and 40%. Read More >>

Emergency Relief Funds For Infrastructure is Key to Recovery

The U.S. House of Representatives’ proposal for only $15 billion in infrastructure funding for state and local governments, as part of their $3 trillion Phase 4 coronavirus relief package, falls far short of what is needed with respect to transportation infrastructure. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), which represents all the state departments of transportation (i.e. CDOT), is estimating a 30% loss in state transportation revenues in the next 18 months, due to the economic downturn. Read More >>
