Proposed St. Lawrence County Budget Keeps Tax Rate the Same

Property owners in St. Lawrence County will not see any change in their county property tax rate under a proposed 2020 county budget released Monday that also increases the number of full-time employees and allocates $10.8 million more for highway projects. “This will be a big year for the highway department,” County Administrator Ruth A. State Officials Dedicate Stretch of Route 37 in Ogdensburg to the Late Chuck Kelly

With the help of family and friends of Charles “Chuck” Kelly and numerous local officials, Senator Patty Ritchie and Assemblyman Mark Walczyk unveiled special signs along State Route 37 marking the “Charles ‘Chuck’ Kelly Memorial Highway.” Kelly, an award-winning journalist and strong advocate for the North Country, passed away last October at the age of 83. Read More >>

Cayuga County Committee Approves Snow Plowing Contract With Towns

A Cayuga County Legislature committee Tuesday voted to approve a new contract that pays town highway departments to clear snow and ice off certain county-owned roads.The Legislature's Public Works committee authorized a three-year contract with the towns that provides for a 4.5% increase in reimbursement for each of the contract's years, or approximately $68,000 per year. The previous three-year contract expired this June, and in its last year was valued at approximately $1.5 million. The 4.5% increase will be applied to that total amount. Read More >>

Initiative to Aid Rural Areas Announced Here By U.S. Transportation Chief

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced here on Tuesday an initiative to ensure that rural road and other infrastructure needs get “full consideration” when her department hands out discretionary grants.Chao said officials in federal highway, aviation, railroad and transit agencies will work in tandem to examine grant programs so that they “better support” rural areas. Chao said President Donald Trump’s administration, including the Department of Transportation, is “especially concerned” with rural areas’ infrastructure needs. Read More >>

Baker Makes Pitch for Transportation Projects

Gov. Charlie Baker wants to borrow $18 billion over the next five years to help fix crumbling roads and bridges while reducing vehicle emissions and traffic. Baker personally made his pitch to lawmakers on Tuesday, telling a legislative panel reviewing his latest transportation bond bill that it will provide needed funding for the state's infrastructure. He told lawmakers that transportation woes, coupled with a shortage of housing, threaten the state's economic growth."We have enviable problems," Baker told the Legislature's Transportation Committee. "Our economy is growing, our population is growing, and the economic activity that dominates our commonwealth is constrained by the limits of our current system." Read More >>
