I-290 Bridge Replacement Project Complete

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that the $6.7 million project to construct two new I-290 bridges is complete. The eastbound and westbound ramps over the NFTA corridor in the Town of Tonawanda opened on Wednesday afternoon.“Transportation infrastructure is critical to economic growth and competitiveness, which is why we are strengthening and modernizing bridges and highways across New York State,” Cuomo said. “These two new bridges will help keep Western New York moving, smoothing the ride and enhancing reliability for commuters and commerce for generations to come.” Read More >>

Pipeline Bans Blamed for Surge in Gas Tankers

The energy policies of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration have come under criticism from both pro-development advocates and climate activists following an increase in shipping compressed natural gas by truck amid the state's refusal to allow the construction of industrial pipelines. Public highways are now being used as "virtual pipelines," with tractor-trailers taking CNG — compressed natural gas — from Pennsylvania production facilities to upstate transfer stations. Read More >>

Bridging Barriers: Sonoran Researchers Seek Wildlife-Friendly Highway Crossings

Every year, more than 2,000 animals, from beavers and skunks, to black bears and coyotes are hit by cars on this section of the highway. But many animals will take passages under, around or over the road if they're available. So Wildlands network is advocating for wildlife friendly highway crossings to be added to sections of Highway 2 that are under expansion.“The highway is one of the main barriers — the other is the border wall,” Aguilar says. Read More >>

Michigan's Whitmer Vetoes $375 Million for Roads, Bridges as Budget Battle Heats Up

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday vetoed $375 million in one-time spending lawmakers appropriated for roads and bridges as part of 147 line-item vetoes totaling nearly $1 billion that she carved out of a nearly $60 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins Tuesday. The Democratic governor's veto of more money for transportation infrastructure comes after she has spent months lobbying the Republican-controlled Legislature to raise $2.5 billion in new taxes to support roads and schools.
