The Governor, The Seneca Nation and the Completely Rotten Highway

Everyone agrees that the highway, which is part of the New York Thruway system but within the tribal lands of the Seneca Nation, needs to be repaired. Reader's View: Governor’s License Plate Tax Grab is Highway Robbery​​​​​​​

As you may have heard, the Governor has announced a plan to force people with perfectly functioning blue and white license plates to turn them in starting April 2020 and pay a $25 fee for new ones and another $20 fee if you want to keep your current plate number. After ending its previous contract with 3M, the state has initiated a new two-year $4 million contract with Avery Dennison to supply the raw materials to produce the newly designed license plates. New York’s license plates are then manufactured at Auburn Correctional Facility by inmates at a labor cost of up to $300,000 annually. Read More >>

Work Starts On $13M I-684 Resurfacing Project In Bedford​​​​​​​

Work has officially begun on the $13 million resurfacing project on I-84, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced. The two-mile section of I-684 from Harris Road to exit 6 in the town of Bedford in Westchester County will be resurfaced as part of the project, which is intended to improve safety and provide a smoother ride for commuters and residents alike.The project’s $13 million funding was secured through a collaboration between the Governor and State Legislature. Read More >>

U.S. Department of Transportation Announces $871.2 Million in Emergency Relief for Road and Bridge Repairs​​​​​​​

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today announced $871.2 million in Emergency Relief (ER) funds to help 39 states, as well as American Samoa, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and tribal governments, make repairs to roads and bridges damaged by storms, floods, and other unexpected events. Read More >>

 

Senate Committee Passes Highway Bill With First-Ever Disaster Resilience Programs​​​​​​​

The nation’s aging and deteriorating roads and bridges might get a major facelift if legislation recently passed by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee becomes law. Led by Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) and ranking member Tom Carper (D-DE), the committee unanimously passed the America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019 earlier this summer by a vote of 21-0. Read More >>
