Street Smarts: Cornell Paves the Way for Safer Roads in NYS

Chase Winton knew he had a problem. A half-mile snippet of Albro Road, a sleepy byway in Sherburne, New York, 36 miles south of Utica, had severe cracks in its pavement. They made for a teeth-chattering ride. “I don’t think you’d want to have an open coffee cup in your hand on that road,” said Winton, Sherburne’s highway superintendent. Read More >>

Local Municipalities Optimistic 'REDI' Will Improve Lake Ontario Shoreline Infrastructure

After another year with record high lake levels, New York State has formed a multi-agency task force to come develop plans to strengthen infrastructure along Lake Ontario’s shoreline. The Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative Commission -- also known as REDI -- continues to meet with local municipalities. Rail Trail and More in the Works in Lenox

The town of Lenox has a lot of projects planned for the near future and the furthest along is the Lenox Rail Trail.  "We're probably two-thirds done with the Lenox Rail Trail. We're looking to start paving around mid-August," Lenox Supervisor Rocky DiVeronica said. "We've still got other odds and ends to do but so far, it's been a great project without any real hiccups." The 2.25-mile trail starts at the Canastota Skate Park on South Peterboro Street and travels all the way to Wampsville and the Madison County Highway Department. The trail itself is planned to be 10 feet wide and completely paved. The Lenox Rail Trail will eventually connect with the Oneida Rail Trail in Wampsville, near the Madison County Highway Department. Read More >>

ACEC New York: New Officers and Directors for 2019-20

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) inducted a new slate of officers and directors at the association’s Annual Meeting on June 5 at the Union League Club in New York City. All officers’ and directors’ terms began on July 1. Read More >>

U.S. DOT Names Nine Marine Highway Projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today announced the designation of nine Marine Highway Projects and a Marine Highway Route that will benefit Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington State and American Samoa. Marine highways are navigable waterways that can be used as alternate options to traditional shipping methods. Read More >>

Senate Committee Acknowledges Climate Change in Passing $287 Billion Infrastructure Bill

The first transportation bill to acknowledge climate change won unanimous support Tuesday from the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. "This is the most substantial highway infrastructure legislation in history," said Chairman John Barrasso, R-Wyo. "Ninety percent of that money will go directly to our roads and bridges." Read More >>

Dubois Co. Highway Department Facing Setbacks in Projects Funded by State

The Dubois County Highway Department is facing some setbacks on thousands of dollars in projects funded through the state. County workers say they recently finished around $200,000 in various road paving work that is mostly funded through a community crossings grant. Bills from contractors are starting to come in, but Highway Superintendent Steve Berg tells us they’re still waiting on the grant money. Read More >>
