Cuomo Urges Caution As Lake Effect Snowfall Returns

Governor Cuomo this week urged New Yorkers to prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions that are forecasted for most of upstate New York beginning late Tuesday night and continuing through the day Thursday across the state. While most of the state is expected to see moderate snowfall, lake effect systems are expected to bring up to one foot of snow to portions of Western New York and the North Country. Intermodal Transportation Hub Planned for Buffalo

Paul A. Karas, New York State Department of Transportation acting commissioner, announced a major milestone in the effort to construct a new intermodal transportation hub for downtown Buffalo. A contract has been awarded to design and build the new Exchange Street Station, a state-of-the-art transportation center that will bring travelers directly into the heart of the city and offer easy connections to bus and light rail service. The new station will promote economic activity and tourism for the area's many attractions. Read More >>

County Recognizes 30, 35-Year Employees

As the calendar gets set to flip over to 2019, this week the Allegany County Board of Legislators honored employees who are closing the book on their 30th year of service to the county. Board Chairman Curt Crandall presented eight employees with Certificates of Appreciation for reaching the 30-year milestone. Seven of them hail from the Department of Public Works — Charles “Boomer” Clark, Jim Cummings, Dean “Jamie” Foster, Mark Gaeta, Dave Szucs, Emmett Taylor and Guy James. James, the DPW Superintendent, received a little extra attention from the board in light of the fact that he is calling it a career early in the new year. Read More >>

Infrastructure Projects Grind to a Halt During Shutdown

Highway construction projects across the country have been jeopardized by the federal shutdown as state officials hesitate to authorize projects planned for 2019 without the assurance of federal funding. “If this continues to drag on it will have real impacts, not only on a state’s ability to build new projects but also on their ability to operate the system that they currently have,” said Jim Tymon, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. “Eventually it’s going to have an impact on operations and maintenance.” Read More >>
