Highway Superintendents Seek More Funding

Highway departments across Greene County rely on funding from the state’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program to help with tasks and are seeking more to help with various issues. The program, commonly known as CHIPS, was established by the state Legislature in 1981. The program gives municipalities money based on its miles of road and motor vehicle registrations, which is reported annually to the state Department of Transportation, according to the DOT website. Highway superintendents discussed the matter during a forum Oct. 29 with the state Assembly Minority Task Force on Critical Infrastructure & Transportation at the Greene County Emergency Services Building in Cairo. Read More >>

Multi-Million Dollar State Highway Projects Across North Country Almost Completed

New York State Department of Transportation says that work is wrapping up on several projects totaling $12 million in highway maintenance work across the North Country. The projects include interstate paving, traffic signal upgrades, crosswalk installations, guiderail replacement and pavement marking installation. One project involved updating pavement markings at intersections to enhance pedestrian safety across St. Lawrence and nearby counties. The $1.2 million project included installing nearly 12 miles of durable pavement markings and more than 4,000 symbols and legend markings at crosswalks and intersections. Cayuga County Legislature Approves Formation of Department of Public Works

The Cayuga County Highway Department and several other departments responsible for county facilities and infrastructure will be reorganized into a single unit. The Cayuga County Legislature last week voted to create a Department of Public Works, which will combine the highway department, buildings and grounds department, parks and trails; and weights and measures into a single administrative structure. According to a memo prepared by County Administrator J. Justin Woods, the only cost of the change is an approximately $20,000 to $30,000 increase for the position of Director of Public Works that would oversee the entire department. Woods said the new structure would allow through increased efficiency through cross-training for employees, the ability for workers to jump between departments as needed, and a streamlined administrative structure. Effectively, the director position would replace what is now the highway superintendent position, currently filled by Acting Superintendent Dan Bowen.  Read More >>
