Tioga County $2 Million Halsey Valley Road Elevation

The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, the Town of Tioga and Tioga County today announced the start of work on the $2 million Halsey Valley Road (CR 7) Elevation Project to raise a quarter-mile stretch of Halsey Valley Road by two feet above the height of the floodwaters caused by Tropical Storm Lee, which stalled over the area in September 2011. The Halsey Valley Road elevation project is one of hundreds funded by GOSR through the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program. Read More >>

 

Loss of Chinese Market Creates Back-Up of Recyclable Material

The Finance Committee of the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators recommended on June 25 transferring $127,000 from the county Highway Department’s highway and street equipment account to the Solid Waste Department. This would cover the deficit in this department’s budget. Highway Superintendent Donald Chambers said the cost of getting rid of recyclable goods has risen from between $10,000 and $11,000 per month to about $30,000 per month. He opted not to buy a new tractor that was included in this year’s budget. Read More >>

Omaha County Bridges Fracture Critical Inspections Are Underway

Eight Otoe County bridges are undergoing a biennial fracture critical inspection by HGM Associates Inc. of Omaha. Cost for this every-other-year inspection will be $3,832.66, according to Otoe County Highway Superintendent Jonathan Brinkman, who reported on the progress of the inspections at the Otoe County Commissioners meeting Tuesday. Read More >>


Smart Highways in Colorado

With high speeds, dense traffic, and construction, highway driving is not for the faint of heart. The state of Colorado is looking to make it a little less stressful, as it rolls out a pilot project for what it calls “smart pavement” – essentially, roads studded with sensors to monitor all sorts of variables. Because, according to the Colorado DOT’s ‘RoadX’ division, “Data is the new asphalt of transportation.” The smart pavement project is a collaboration with a company called Integrated Roadways. Integrated Roadways implements pre-cast concrete slabs that are equipped with sensors and routers and are able to obtain and share information relating to traffic patterns, road hazards, and even dispatch help when a vehicle drives off the road. Read More >>
