JOB OPPORTUNITY - ONE (1) PERMANENT FULL-TIME POSITION SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN July 10, 2019

SCHEDULE: Typically Monday-Friday (35 hours/week); summer schedule may change to accommodate construction crews.

GRADE: Single Rate Grade 7 $55,544/Entry

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing a wide range of technical work including the application of standard engineering principles and practices to a variety of public works engineering projects and assignments. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level engineer with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment according to established procedures and policies. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.) Performs general survey work including route layouts, location of rights-of-way and property boundaries, and establishing proper grades and alignments; Serves as chief of party in engineering surveys; Drafts and prepares maps, charts and drawings using computer aided design software and checks those prepared by subordinates; Provides technical assistance to Engineering Technicians and construction crews; Inspects construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; Participates in the preparation of plans, specifications, designs and drawings for proposed engineering projects; Prepares cost estimates, time schedules and material specifications for proposed engineering projects; Develops, researches and compiles informational material relevant to highway projects; Manages roadway, bridge and Federal Aid projects; Prepares and maintains a variety of records, reports and statistics; May perform snow removal and ice control duties when required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering; good knowledge of modern methods, materials and techniques of highway and bridge construction; good knowledge of asphalt and concrete placement and inspection and the ability to provide accurate construction estimates; ability to develop and manage multi-faceted roadway and bridge programs, including Federal Aid projects, and apply civil and structural engineering practices as well as federal, state and local regulations; competency and background in local bridge design and maintenance, including repairs of steel, timber and concrete bridges; good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of land survey; skill in the use of modern surveying and drafting instruments and equipment; experience with AutoCad or similar CADD system and ability to read blueprints and create record drawings; ability to perform mathematical computations; ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration; ability to community effectively both orally and in writing; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs; ability to participate in assigned projects and lay out work for others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering; or Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s degree in civil engineering, surveying or closely related field and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering technology, surveying or construction management; or Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering technology, surveying or construction management.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. E.I.T. Certification, or NICET Level II or III Certification is desired but not required at the time of appointment.
